Goodreads Giveaway for Grinder’s Keeper

Back to back Goodreads posts?  If I love Goodreads so much why don’t I marry it?  Well, because I’m already married and if I left her for Goodreads she’d bludgeon me while I was sleeping.  Anyway, the last post was about Goodreads generally and this one is about one of their specific functions.  Giveaways.

They offer a simple enter-to-win drawing so authors and publishers can throw a freebie out there for fans and potential fans.  I’ve been wanting to try this for some time.  At first I thought I’d make it a holiday giveaway, but that didn’t feel right and I got super busy (cause of the holidays).  A few weeks of holiday recovery time put us close to my birthday, so I scheduled it to start then.  Like a hobbit, I will give presents on my birthday.

I’m giving away three signed copies of Grinder’s Keeper.  This is my first giveaway, so it’s a bit of a trial run, but so far it’s getting a good response.  The winners are picked by Goodreads based on some mysterious algorithm.  They’re not picked by me, so I can’t play favorites and it’s no use trying to sway me.  Well, you can try to send me bottles of Scotch or something and I’ll be rooting for you, it just won’t really increase your chances to win.  The contest ends February 8, and you have to enter to win.  When it’s all over and I’ve sent the winners their books, I’ll likely post a recap here for those interested.

The Books and Beer Hangout.
avatar

I’ve talked about ePublish Unum on the blog before.  Jeff Moriarty and Evo Terra are using their considerable tech know-how, business savvy, and general think-outside-the-box attitude to create a resource for writers who want to go digital.  They offer web-based seminars that are more than worth the money.  I took The Quick and The Read course and it gave me the tools to self-publish.

But, generous sods that they are, they offer stuff that’s free to all.  Like the Books and Beer Hangout that goes out live on Thursdays.  They keep the run time around fifteen minutes but it’s crammed with gooey goodness, like a Boston creme donut of info.  Occasionally they have guests and this past Thursday that guest was me.

I haven’t done a lot of this sort of thing, but turns out it’s pretty fun.  I did get a little nervous when the “on air” light started flashing.  Fortunately, I had a beer handy and realized the secret genius of the show format…beer.  We did talk about books as well.  Mostly about the experience of being a first time author.  So, thanks go out to Jeff and Evo for a cool experience.

Free Fall Fiction For October!

October is here!  It’s my first fall in the woods after many years in the Sonoran desert.  This time of year has always charged me with weird energies.  It’s an in between time.  Summer’s over, but the true cold of Winter is still ahead.  The trees explode in a riot of color and the leaves fall, by the end of the month they’ll be bare and the woods will look like a completely different place.  Misty mornings and rainy days are common, but it’s just as common to see golden sunsets and harvest moons.  And it all leads up to the best holiday ever, Halloween!

So October is also a month when I’m looking for good scary movies and revisiting old favorites.  Same for my reading material.  This is when my Lovecraft collections get plenty of play.  This year I had the urge to get that spooky energy plugged into my writing as well.  My stuff usually tends toward the weird and/or uncanny already, but I wanted to get out some that was straight up macabre.  And I wanted to share it, so here’s what I’m gonna do.

I have three short stories in mind and I want to put them here on the blog starting next Friday.  That gives me a nice tight deadline to get them in shape.  In the meantime, I thought I’d kick the month off with everybody’s favorite–zombies.  From today, Tuesday the 2nd,  until midnight, Friday the 5th, West of Dead is free on Amazon.  Yay, free!

West of Dead is the debut story of my pulp hero, Nathaniel Caine.  Caine is a Civil War veteran trying to forget the war and see the West.  His trip turns deadly when he and his fellow travelers are attacked by a zombie horde.  It’s a quick read and I think it’s a fun one.  It’s the only zombie story I’ve done, and it was a helluva lot of fun to write.  If you haven’t read it, now is the time to pick it up.  If you’re not into zombie stories, I’m sure you know someone who is, so tell them to come and get it!

Book Release Recap

I meant to get a thank-you and a recap out earlier, but I got super busy.  It’s now exactly seven days since the Grinder’s Keeper release, so I’m gonna pretend I had it scheduled that way all along.  Here’s a recap of random thoughts.

Thank you.  First order of business is to thank everybody who bought the book and passed the word.  When you’re just starting out, your promotional budget will usually hover somewhere around zero dollars.  The go-to technique in that case is word of mouth, and every little bit helps.  Fortunately, social media is a force multiplier on that front, and my friends are great about talking me up.  If you want to help an indie author, click like, share FB posts, comment on their blogs, rate them on Goodreads, retweet, click the Google +1 button…anything to get the word out to someone that might like the book.  It all matters.

People love free stuff.  The zero dollar promotional budget isn’t just an advertising thing.  It means the only incentive you have to offer is the work itself.  I think they’re good, but I have to get you to read it before you’ll believe me.  Since the work is all I had that’s what I offered.  I put up the first Caine book, West of Dead, for free for one day only.  I had absolutely no idea what to expect.  It downloaded 439 times.  I’m new at this but that seemed like a lot.  At the very least it’s 439 people reading today that weren’t yesterday.

I’m kind of a big deal in the UK.   West of Dead sold two copies in Great Britain last month.  During the free download period twenty people grabbed it.  How cool is it to sell overseas?  There are 22 people somewhere in England reading my story!  If I ever stop thinking that’s cool I’ll probably stop writing.

Don’t forget the Germans.  5 downloads in Germany.  Danke.

Get reviews.  This is just a hunch but I think the free promo went well because WoD had a bunch of reviews.  It’s okay to ask friends and it’s okay for them to be honest.  In fact it’s better if they are honest.  You’re probably better off with ten 4 star reviews than one 5 star review.  Again I base this off of nothing but feeling, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

Get to work.  When the free promos started going crazy I was taken aback.  I spent most of the day watching the numbers and tweeting the milestones.  That’s fine but I shook it off the next morning and got back to work.  I started the process of making a print version of Grinder’s Keeper available.  I started getting it out to other digital outlets (it’s live on Kobo now).  And most importantly I…

…Keep writing.  As much as you have to worry about marketing and networking and all that other good stuff, it’s still about content.  So I’m busily typing away on the next novel.  It is another Caine story.  I have ideas for other work, including one for another series, but right now I’m putting a lot of effort into building Nathaniel Caine and his weird west world.

This is fun.  As much work as this is, and sometimes it feels like a metric shit ton of work, it’s still a helluva lot of fun.  I’m lucky enough to be doing this full time which puts me square in the ‘follow your passion’ group.  That’s a good place to be.

Friday the 13Th Book Launch for Grinder’s Keeper (plus free download)

Friday the 13th and it’s my luck day!  I’m launching my second book Grinder’s Keeper a Nathaniel Caine Adventure.  Caine made his debut in a kooky little zombie story called West of Dead.  Now he’s back in another supernatural adventure, … Continue reading
